obituary

Stanley Dangerfield — 1911-1988. Inaugural President of the EACA until he relinquished the post to Jim Sargeant in 1964. Stanley was a Poodle owner and international ‘all-rounder’ judge. He was also Chief Steward at Crufts and judged Crufts’ BIS in 1970. He was also a well known canine journalist, writing regular columns in ’Our Dogs’ and both the Daily and Sunday Express. He presented Crufts on BBC television for twenty-seven years, before his retirement in 1981, and was a ‘castaway’ on the BBC radio programme ‘Desert Island Discs’ on 29 March 1975. He died in 1988, aged seventy-seven, following a stroke.

Fred Buckle (burwydne)a resident of Sleaford, Lincolnshire, Fred took over the secretarial duties in 1963, from Mrs Frisby who had succeeded Bobbee Roos in 1958. He held the role for four years and, following his unexpected death, Jim Barnard took over the reigns in 1967.

Jim and Pat Barnard (Washbay) Stanley Dangerfield, EACAs inaugural President Fred Buckle, EACAs Secretary between 1963 and 1967.

Pat and Jim Barnard (washbay)although not Founder members, both Jim and Pat worked tirelessly for the club’s benefit over a long period of time, especially during the early years.

Jim held a number of offices spanning a period of forty years. Initially he brought stability to the important office of Secretary which he held from 1967 until 1970; followed by Chairman from 1975 to 1983 before being elevated to the office of President in 1983. He held this position until 2007, whilst Pat had the distinction of being our longest serving Secretary, fulfilling this difficult role for the sixteen years between 1970 and 1986.

After expressing a wish to retire from active involvement in 2007, the EACA committee invited Pat & Jim to become the Club’s first Patrons, an honorary position they kindly agreed to accepted in a joint capacity. Sadly, Jim passed away in the spring of 2017.

Derrick Clarke (beaublade) — Derrick had formerly been Treasurer of the Collie Association and when he and his wife, Thelma, moved from London to Haverhill in Suffolk, they were elected onto the committee of the EACA. Derrick held the position of Chairman between 1984 and 1992, with a two-year break between 1988 and 1990 for ill health.

In recent years Derrick had suffered with heart problems so it was a shock to hear that Thelma had died in December 2017. Derrick, too ill to attend Thelma’s funeral on 27th December, sadly passed away on 8th January 2018.

Lyn Westby (lowerpark) — Initially Essex-based, Lyn was heavily involved with ponies and horses in her younger days, running a Riding School for thirteen years, and has owned and bred Rough Collies since the early 1950’s. Between 1968 and 1979 she was Secretary of the London and Provincial Collie Club and, following the death of her husband in 1978, moved to Old Buckenham in Norfolk where she introduced Japanese Spitz and Smooth Collies to her Lowerpark kennel.

Lyn was elected onto the committee of the EACA in 1980, becoming Chairman in 1988. Apart from a two-year gap between 1990 and 1992, when Derrick Clarke (Beaublade) was elected as Chairman in her place, Lyn was re-elected to the role in 1992 and held office until 2007 when the committee invited her to become President.

.

In recent years Lyn had moved further south to be nearer her family and, after leading a full and active life, she sadly died on 28th December 2017 at the age of 93.

.

Derrick was instrumental in introducing the Club Rule ‘ A committee member must have served for at least three years before he/she can be elected as an Officer’ . This rule has served the Club in good stead ever since (see EACA’s Constitution).

Pat Hutchinson (karibuni) — Co-opted onto the EACA committee in 1982 and elected Secretary in 1986 following the retirement of Pat Barnard. She held the role for the next eleven years when Brian House (Fivejays) took over the role in 1997. Following a break of several years, Pat was re-elected onto the committee in 2007 and she currently holds the roles of Vice-Chairman, Health Coordinator and Web Master.

Miranda Blake (corydon) — Miranda was elected onto the committee in 2007 as ‘Acting Secretary’,  and the following year she and Lisa Pettitt agreed to share the role - Miranda as Club Secretary and Lisa as Show Secretary.

Lisa Pettitt (lakebank)following several years on the committee, Lisa was elected as Show Secretary in 2007 and works closely with Miranda on Club affairs.
